A chance for every child!
If you’re born in a place like Kibagare, life will offer you few opportunities.
Our foundation is trying to change that by supporting the Good News Centre in Kibagare, but also by helping individual children who live there. We´re especially committed to kids who have completed primary school. Secondary school is not a given in Kenya. It costs a lot of money (far more than in most European countries). As a result, many 12-year-olds end up at home or on the streets looking for odd jobs or food – not yet equipped for an independent life, far less a life in a threatening environment like the slums.
We try to get as many children and youths as we can into boarding schools. Boarding schools are normal in Kenya’s educational system; in fact, they’re more common than day schools. Kids attending boarding school enjoy a roof over their heads, food, supervision and education. Our hope is that this will give them a fairer chance when they leave school 4 years later. A less costly alternative is to put children through vocational training at a local institute. In this scenario, the child remains living at home in the slums. We examine the possibilities for each individual child.
Our local ex-pat committee members are personally engaged in the lives of these youngsters, helping them purchase school books, uniforms, bus tickets et cetera, visiting parent days at school and talking to teachers about their progress.
Pupils who excel at school may receive a grant to move on to higher vocational training.
Over the years, our foundation has given hundreds of youths access to education.
It’s impossible for us to keep in touch with all of them, but we manage to with some. Read more about what life has brought them here.
